Metabolic Health Expert Releases Video Challenging Human Omnivore Classification

By Marc Bates

Marc Bates, MPH, has released a new YouTube video presenting evidence that humans are not true omnivores, contradicting conventional nutritional wisdom through paleoarchaeological research.

The video explores how the ability to digest both plants and animals does not necessarily indicate optimal health outcomes. Bates argues that digestive capability differs fundamentally from metabolic optimization.

"Because so many people think humans are omnivores," Bates explained when asked about his motivation for creating the content. "Because you can digest something doesn't mean that it's optimal for your health."

The presentation focuses on paleoarchaeological evidence suggesting Paleolithic humans functioned as "facilitated fat hunters." Nitrogen isotope studies of pre-agricultural human bones reveal dietary patterns dominated by fat and protein rather than plant material.

"When they do nitrogen studies on the bones from pre-agricultural humans, they showed definite signs that the majority, if not the totality of the diet was protein, was fat and protein, not plant material," Bates stated.

The video challenges mainstream dietary recommendations by positioning ketosis as humanity's natural metabolic state rather than an alternative approach. This perspective reframes modern carbohydrate-heavy diets as deviations from evolutionary dietary patterns.

The content aims to educate viewers about the biochemical efficiency of ketones versus glucose as fuel sources, supporting the argument for fat-fueled metabolism as the human biological default.
